According to the University of Florida (UF) Board of Governors, research spending has increased by 80 percent over the past decade. The rate stands at nearly twice the average expansion rate for research expenditures among universities across the United States.

Continuing its impressive record of research spending growth, UF’s recent research expenditures significantly exceeded projected expectations. On March 27, 2024, the UF Board of Governors announced that the University’s $164 million in contributions helped the State University System (SUS) of Florida hit an unprecedented $2.94 billion in total research spending for the 2022/2023 academic year. UF contributions were the highest of all institutions in the SUS.

The 2022/2023 increase in SUS research expenditures translates to an upturn of more than $400 million over the previous academic year. UF Board of Governors chair Brian Lamb credits interinstitutional collaboration and outstanding research faculty across SUS for acquiring the various research grants and federal awards that have driven its system-wide research spending growth.
